Google Egypt 2.0 Day 1: Google AdWords, Analytics & Apps

Two Google AdWords Sessions:
It was surprise for me to see huge percentage of audience to attend the two sessions for Google AdWords that was presented by three Google AdWords specialists.
That presentation went technical before explaining the ‘big picture’ of Google AdWords without its complex terminologies and advanced options. May be I am saying that because I am digital marketing freelancer and online marketing consultant, and I met clients who really want to understand online media in somehow simple way. I believe that communicating such issue would truly boost the web advertising and internet marketing here in Egypt.

Google Egypt 2.0 Day 1: Google Innovations, Localization & GTUG

Google Innovations:
Self-driving cars was the most interested part of this seminar.  As I understood, Google works on programming chips for cars so they would be auto-driven in order to allow car sharing.  Car sharing means that you do not have to own a car, but a car will get you to work, while then the same car will serve other passengers around city and then you will find one when you get to home. It is amazing sort of Could Cars similar to Cloud Computing.
I tried to get the video we see but failed to find it as even Google Egypt 2.0 presentations are still not uploaded! However, this video helps:

Google Egypt 2.0 Day 1: Digital Marketers meet Online Media Giant

Sunday 11th of December was first day of 3-days series of Google Egypt Days that was held in Fairmont Heliopolis here in Cairo.

Overview:
The event had many parallel tracks for digital marketing and online media topics including Google services, Google AdWords, Google Analytics, Google Maps, Google Plus, Google AdSense, and Google Apps plus session for Arabic localization of Google.
The audience has huge number of juniors or university students as well as fewer numbers of digital marketing consultants, telecom regulatory bodies, IT managers, software developers, entrepreneurs, etc. The only issue was not having wireless network plus down of MobiNil USB Modem service that was truly disappointing. Fortunately, signal mobile phone line (MobiNil also) was OK, so the problem was not severe.

Welcome Keynotes (and Google VP Presentation in Arabic):
First presentation was conducted by Mohammad Gawdat who is Google’s Vice President Emerging Markets. Wael Fakharany introduced Gawdat as the manager of Wael's manager.
The Google VP presentation was in Arabic as well as slides themselves; and title was

5 Tactics to Measure Online Marketing ROI

Social media marketing is about ROC: Return on Conversation as Liana Evans indicated in her book. While cost is considered in any marketing campaign, ROI calculations are used for direct marketing and general advertising activities.
Social media engagement activities via Facebook, LinkedIn, forums, Twitter, or YouTube, etc are measured by return on conversation (post, retweet, like, comment, share, reply, etc).

However, below are 5  useful tactics to measure online marketing performance:

1.    Analyze website visitors; where they came from, how they are browsing your pages, new visitors, etc. If you’re investing in social media engagement, you would track how this reflects in more website visits from those social media accounts. Google Analytics is a great tool to perform such analysis including In-Page Analytics.

2.    Assign dedicated email and/or phone number for your online advertising campaigns and social media accounts. This will help decision makers to track sales leads that were initiated via Twitter engagement for example while others were initiated via website contact form. This blog article here highlights 5 website success measures.

3.    Track online leads (i.e. website contact form tickets). This helps your company to realize the effect of advertising campaigns in terms of number of tickets, number of new followers, number of Facebook page likes, etc.

4.    Adjust call-to-action and advertising settings: CTR (Click-Through-Rate) is one of indicators used to evaluate online ads performance.
We at New Egypt Consulting had executed Google ads with CTR 1.68% and Facebook ads with CTR 0.292% and 0.07%. More about Facebook CTR in Saudi Arabia and Egypt here.

5.    Appearing in 1st page of Yahoo!/Google: SEO adjustment and updated blog are key factors to help your company to appear in search results related to your business. New Egypt Consulting itself appears in first page of major search engines (more interested SEO hints here).

CTR of Facebook Ads Campaigns in KSA and Egypt

Although Facebook provides intelligent advertising solutions for marketers and brand sales managers, the need for performance indicators exists as calculations of both ROI and cost per acquisition are required.

One of indicators is Click-Through-Rate CTR; which measures number of people who click on your online advertising as percentage of total audience who actually seen your ad. Higher CTR means that your ad is well-articulated in terms of ad text and image plus audience targeting and page location.

To get higher CTR, and to design high-performer advertising campaigns via Facebook platform, I highly recommend you to understand 8 rules that I found on AllFacebook dot com website. The rules were articulated for promoting Facebook page using Facebook ad, but they are actually applicable for getting higher CTR and lower CPC (Cost Per Click):
http://www.allfacebook.com/how-we-got-to-40310-facebook-fans-in-4-days-2010-06

I do remember B2C brand (Saudi Arabia and Egypt mainly) that asked to analyze its Facebook campaigns performance. For more than 100 million impressions, I found average CTR of 0.04% while in this 2011 case study (How to get 1 cent CPC), Muslim countries Egypt and Pakistan got higher click-through-rate (both achieved 0.23%) for mother-kid related advertising campaign. However, below image shows my own 0.092% CTR score for my first Facebook ads promoting my job board blog:

For Brand Managers: How to Customize Facebook Page Status

One of interested options available in Facebook is to customize your message as Facebook page admin based on either/both country and/or language.

For a brand that is existing in two countries, Facebook page admin can easily post separate offers/status for each of the two countries. In United States for example where English and Spanish are commonly used, Facebook admins can post message in English targeting fans who use Facebook with English interface, while Spanish-written post would be tailored for Spanish interface fans.

Below screen shots simply explains this feature in details:

1.Whether you post status, photo or question; you have the option of customizing your message.

Global TV Advertising Clip for Google (Draft)

I am pro-Google products and services even being freelancer internet marketer and social media consultant.
One day, I had imagined that Google would assign creative Googler to articulate creative scenario for TV ad clip that would be broadcasting in different countries.

I assumed that the TV advertising should highlight Google as leading internet player that has positively affected lives of zillions of people among different continents.

I had drafted the following audio-visual script:

1st Scene: Two US teenagers in 90s, one asks other: do you use internet?

3 Tips to Use Email Campaigns for Business Advertising

1- Send Monthly Newsletter: Allow your website visitors to submit their emails to receive your monthly newsletter. Explain briefly the value of subscription (i.e. exclusive discounts, industry updates, etc). However, it is important to allocate time to prepare and send the newsletter at time, do not underestimate newsletters, please:).

2- Prioritize Email Marketing: Do not depend only on traditional online marketing channels. For example, announcing job vacancies via recruitment websites and related Facebook and twitter accounts is something good. However, announcing them via email campaign to previous job applicants and those who applied for your career newsletter will get you more qualified CVs.

3- Consider Email Groups: Specialized email groups are highly recommended to directly reach your potential segment. In Egypt, IEEE has its own email group. For both Gulf and Egypt, targeting pharmacists and medical representatives would be recommended via Pharmacists Coffee. Targeting alumni groups for MBA and colleges is recommended as well.

At New Egypt Consulting, we tailor email advertising solutions that match your business needs at affordable cost and minimum operations headache. Our email marketing services include sales writing, newsletter design counseling, content development and campaign management plus tracking follow-ups. Do not hesitate to contact us now:

6 Basic P's for Business Email Communications

1-Personalize:
If you are sending important email related to meeting request, or client presentation, then please go ahead and communicate it verbally with the recipients (face-to-face or via phone).
Email communications doesn't mean sticking to PC monitor, it is also about face-to-face interaction especially in important emails.
It had been known psychologically that human focus in face-to-face communications is much higher than email notifications.

2-Prioritize and Summarize:

Corporate HR Manager? 3 Reasons to Start Recruitment Blog

In today's world, each and every business organization is working hard to compete and strive.
Companies invest to train their employees, hire eMarketing consultants, and build user-friendly websites.
Seriously, human resources (HR) directors, recruitment managers, and career development counselors all have to get management approval to add official blog to the company web.
Current blogging technologies give option to easily and effectively manage let's say two blogs; private blog for company employees and public one for advertising career vacancies and job-related PR activities. You can even create one unified blog using WordPress that allows protecting posts with password.
I can list three reasons that would encourage training and HR departments within corporations to start official blog and continuously develop and update its content. Here are the 3 reasons:

Reason #1 : Ensure Transparent Communications:
Having official career blog helps you publicize HR and personnel regulations which saves time of employees and executives. Company employees can subscribe to automatically receive new blog posts (holidays, news, regulations, etc).

Marketing or Sales? 3 Reasons to Invest in a Blog

In today's world, each and every business organization is working hard to compete and strive.
Companies invest to train their employees, publicize advertising campaigns and build user-friendly websites.

Seriously, sales managers and marketing directors (i.e. CMO) have to consider budgeting for add a blog to the company website. I can list three reasons that would encourage marketing departments within corporations to start official blog and continuously develop and update its content. Here are the 3 reasons:

Reason #1 : Highlight Your Company Business Experience:
Gone are the times when website visitors were looking for working hours and contact information. Now, potential clients are looking for relative previous experiences while potential suppliers are looking for relative assessment information.
Also, employees and job seekers all are looking for relative career-related news (see reason #3).

With today's revolution of social media tools (and blogs are part of them), people are looking for additional relative information.
Bloggers are great tool for any company or enterprise to promote its products and services.

Newspaper Publisher? 3 Reasons to Email Content

I always believe that digital publishing has an amazing growth opportunities here in Egypt and MENA region.
We all read daily newspapers whether the printed edition or the web-based versions.
At top of our interests is the daily/weekly published columns and op-eds for famous authors.

The challenging question is: Why I am unable to subscribe online to receive my favorite articles directly to my email inbox?
In Arabic: لماذا لا يمكنني استلام مقالات كتابي المفضلين عبر البريد الالكتروني كل صباح رغم أن هذا يمكن أن يدر دخلا من الإعلانات للصحف المصرية والعربية؟

AlGareeda Online Newspaper is almost the only Egyptian press content publisher who utilizes email communications
Now, I can list 3 reasons for press publishers and both Egyptian & Arab newspapers to immediately implement an online system for sending articles via email to subscribers:

Social Media Networks & National Challenges

Social media networks and their massive growth are adding three national challenges to policy makers:

1-Media Communications:
With the open digital communications and social media networks, it is essential to communicate policies to the different segments of people. Different segments have different needs, and are acting/behaving differently.

Integrating the media communications with social media networks (i.e. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube) is a key success factor.

2-Security Procedures:
In the past, broadcasting governmental statements over radio waves can contain a public unrest.

During Jan25 revolution here in Egypt, a viral YouTube video of police car running over protesters helped triggering nationwide unrest. After Jan25 revolution, documents leaked from the police intelligence department (State Security) were published online!

Also, cyber security is another key challenge.

3-People-led Communities:
Although internet penetration is facing challenges in Egypt, social media networks can really contribute positively to people-led initiatives and projects.

10 Communications Lessons CEOs Learn from Egypt's Mubarak

The question all the world is asking nowadays: why the Egyptian president Mohamed Hosni Mubarak - who was described as proud man by ABC's Christiane Amanpour - why his 30 years of governing the country were resulted in protests in Tahrir Square asking him to leave?
Mubarak has been described by Facebook page of We All Khaled Saed in 15th of January 2011 as leader who had been "serving the nation for 30 years".

Away from political, social and economic factors within Egypt, here are few important communications lessons for each and every CEO to avoid facing Mubarak's end while leading a corporate or multinational company:

1-Only God is Forever the One:
Every one of us has role that will end one day whether by death, succession (i.e. end of term), promotion, resignation, or even lay-off. CEO is no exception for that.

Egypt has vast majority of Muslims who believe in one God and in death as fact. Although the toppled president Hosni Mubarak was Muslim, it seems that he did not realize the importance of having clear and solid succession plan in country like Egypt (85m+ population, army of 1m+ soldiers, etc).
Mubarak didn't assign deputy or vice-president unlike late presidents Naguib, Nasser and Sadat who always assigned at least one vice-president (Mubarak himself was VP for Sadat).

In today's dynamic environment, one-man show is no more accepted whether for large corporation or leading country.
Achievements of ex-leaders and previous managers should be communicated among the entire organization, so it would be the 'normal' situation that CEO and any other person will deliver the responsibility to someone else after him at certain moment.

2-Prioritize Your Stakeholders:

Social Media Role in Jan25 Revolution

We hear on a daily basis claims that social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter were the real force behind mass protests in Tahrir Square that triggered January 25th revolution in Egypt.

However, the role of social media networks was overestimated for below 3 reasons:

1- The Escape of the Tunisian President:
In 7th of January 2011 while Tunisian unrest was heating, the famous Egyptian Facebook page of We All Khaled Saed published a post saying the revolution will damage Egypt!

Once Tunisian president Zine Al-Abdine Ben Ali had left Tunisia escaping to Saudi Arabia, the entire private media coverage had changed in Egypt. The perception of people in Egypt had been prepared that it is possible to remove Mubarak.

2-The Mass Offline Media:
Calls to protest in 25th of January were spreading over social media in Egypt, that's true.
However, political movements and opposition parties all supported those calls.

The key factor here is the media coverage for those calls, not the calls themselves. Many daily newspapers and TV shows were covering protest calls, and preparation activities by parties and political movements.

The ruling party call to protest supporting Mubarak added another buzz to January 25 protests.

3-Egypt's Internet and Facebook Low Penetration Rates:
A key reason to believe that social media networks role was overestimated is the well-known internet and Facebook low penetration rates in Egypt.

Social Media & Governments: Facebook in UK

BBC unveiled major social networks were called to the home office next on 25th of August to discuss the English riots with home secretary Theresa May.

Facebook has confirmed its attendance while Twitter did not respond to a question by BBC.
Blackberry has suggested it will also be there.

Prime Minister David Cameron has said the government would look at limiting access to such services during any future disorder.

"We look forward to meeting with the home secretary to explain the measures we have been taking to ensure that Facebook is a safe and positive platform for people in the UK at this challenging time," it said in a statement.

David Cameron said government is "Working with the police, the intelligence services and industry to look at whether it would be right to stop people communicating via these websites and services when we know they are plotting violence, disorder and criminality.”

Police in London said that they managed to thwart attacks on the Olympic site and on Oxford Street based information gathered from Twitter and BBM.

Communications networks that operate in the UK can be compelled to hand over individuals' personal messages if police are able to show that they relate to criminal behaviour.
The rules gathering such queries are outlined in the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA).

Banking Sector Report 2010: Mobile Technology

Below is the cover story of the Business Monthly Magazine published by American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt in July 2010. It is titled "Conservative Frameworks, New Opportunities" and it starts with "The government and banking sector consider how best to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing financial environment".
Let's go through the report that was prepared by Tamer Hafez:

Egypt’s banking sector was largely insulated from the worst of the 2008 financial crisis, and the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has been widely credited for preventing the use of complex instruments such as financial derivatives and currency margin trading.
Fast forward to 2010 and questions emerge as government and financial leaders look ahead. Should the country maintain its longstanding conservative regulatory environment? Or will investors’ appetite for emerging markets and the rise of sub-Saharan African nations as viable competitors dictate the retooling of the Egyptian banking system to encourage expansion?
